Planning around how the room is used

Many Kerala homes have two living spaces: a formal room near the entrance for receiving guests, and a family living area deeper in the house where television, reading and everyday conversation happen. Deciding which room does what, and how private each should be, shapes everything from furniture to lighting. A formal room can be quieter and more composed; the family room needs comfortable seating, storage for the clutter of daily life and space for children.

Furniture and layout

Seating is arranged for conversation first, with a clear route through the room that does not cut across the group. Sofas pushed against the walls leave a void in the middle of a large room; floating them on a rug with side tables creates a more intimate setting. Built-in window seats or low platforms, inspired by the traditional thinna, add seating without crowding the floor.

Fabrics and finishes for humid air

Kerala's humidity favours natural fibres and surfaces that can be wiped clean:

  • Linen and cotton upholstery with removable covers
  • Cane and rattan for chairs and screens
  • Solid timber or veneered surfaces with a durable lacquer or oil finish
  • Rugs that can be lifted and aired, rather than fitted carpet

Light through the day

Daylight is managed with sheer curtains or blinds that soften glare without darkening the room. In the evening, layered lighting takes over: ceiling fixtures on dimmers, floor and table lamps, and a few accent lights on art or shelves. Ceiling fans are positioned over the seating group rather than in the geometric centre of the ceiling, and switches are placed where people actually enter the room.
