Interior Design in Kerala

Interiors planned around daylight, airflow and the way a household actually uses each room. Joinery, lighting, finishes and furniture are designed together, so rooms stay calm, practical and easy to maintain through Kerala's humid months.

Interiors that begin with the plan

Good interiors are rarely about decoration alone. Where the windows sit, how deep a room is and which way it faces decide how it will feel long before a colour is chosen. Interior design works best when it starts while the house is still being drawn, so that switch positions, plumbing points, ceiling heights and joinery are planned together rather than patched in later.

Designing for humidity

Kerala's damp months are hard on interiors. Board that is not water-resistant swells, wardrobes against damp walls grow mould, and heavy fabrics hold moisture and odour. A few principles keep rooms healthy:

  • Boiling-water-proof or marine-grade plywood for kitchens, bathrooms and wardrobes on external walls
  • Ventilated shutters, or a small air gap behind full-height storage
  • Breathable wall finishes, such as lime or mineral paints, on walls prone to damp
  • Hard, washable floors instead of wall-to-wall carpet
  • Natural fibres such as cotton, linen and cane, which dry quickly

Light, colour and calm

Strong sunlight outside means interiors can afford to be quieter. Warm whites, timber, stone and muted earth tones settle well in bright tropical light, while a few deeper colours give rooms depth. Lighting is planned in layers — general light, task light at counters and desks, and softer light for the evening — with warm colour temperatures in living and sleeping spaces.

What the work includes

Space planning, furniture layouts, joinery design, kitchens and wardrobes, ceilings, lighting design, material and colour schemes, loose furniture and soft furnishings, and coordination with contractors on site. A project can cover a single room or a whole house. See kitchen designs and complete home interiors for the range, or start a conversation about your rooms.

Common questions

When should interior design start on a new house?
Ideally during the architectural design stage, before electrical and plumbing work begins. Planning furniture layouts early fixes the right positions for sockets, switches, lights, water points and air-conditioning lines, and avoids cutting into finished walls later.
Which materials hold up best in Kerala's humidity?
Boiling-water-proof or marine-grade plywood, seasoned solid hardwood, natural stone, ceramic and vitrified tiles, quartz or granite worktops and breathable wall finishes all perform well. Untreated particle board, wall-to-wall carpet and heavy fabric wall coverings tend to struggle.
Can existing furniture be part of a new scheme?
Yes. Good pieces, particularly old solid-timber furniture, often anchor a room. They are measured and photographed early so that the layout, colours and new joinery are planned around them.
