Modern House Elevation Designs in Kerala

Elevations developed from the plan outward, in which every projection, opening and change of material has a reason. The aim is a house composed on all four sides, not a decorated front with blank walls behind it.

Composed on all four sides

Many houses have a decorated front and plain, blank sides. Yet on most plots the side walls are seen from the road, from neighbouring houses and along the approach. Elevation design treats every face of the house with the same care: not with equal decoration, but with the same discipline of proportion, openings and materials. On a corner plot, two faces are in full public view.

Proportion and rhythm

Elevations are governed by a few relationships: the height of each floor, the width and spacing of openings, the depth of roof projections and the ratio of solid wall to glass. Aligning windows vertically between floors, keeping sill and lintel lines consistent and limiting the number of materials on one face gives an elevation calm. A single strong move, such as a deep roof plane, a projecting frame or a screened balcony, usually reads better than several competing features.

Shade as a design element

Sunshades, fins, louvres and screens are not add-ons in Kerala; they are part of the elevation. A horizontal sunshade above a south-facing window, vertical fins on a west-facing bedroom or a terracotta jaali in front of a stair window all give the facade depth and shadow while keeping heat out.

Designing for weathering

  • Copings and parapet tops sloped inwards or fitted with drips to prevent streaking
  • No ledges or recesses where water and dirt can collect
  • Textured or clad finishes on faces exposed to driving rain
  • Colours tested as site samples, in sun and in shade, before final selection

Testing before building

Elevation options are best compared in 3D, with true sun angles and the surrounding context. Exterior 3D renders make the comparison concrete, and front elevation designs look closely at the street face.

Common questions

Can the elevation change after the building permit is issued?
Changes to finishes, colours and minor features usually do not affect the permit. Changes that alter built-up area, height, setbacks or the number of floors generally need revised approval from the local body, so check before work proceeds.
Which colours work best on a Kerala exterior?
Light, warm tones reflect heat but show algae and staining on shaded walls; mid-tone, earthy colours hide weathering better. A lighter main colour combined with natural materials or darker accents on the lower and most exposed areas is a practical approach.
